About SYNE Carbon

Built to fix
carbon market integrity.

SYNE Carbon was founded on a single conviction: that carbon markets can only deliver real climate impact if they are built on rigorous, independent data. We are the intelligence layer that makes that possible.

Our Mission

Data-driven integrity
for carbon markets

Carbon markets have enormous potential to channel capital into climate solutions at scale — but only if credit quality can be trusted. SYNE Carbon exists to make that trust possible: through rigorous, independent ratings, transparent methodology, and the earth intelligence data that validates every claim.

We serve project developers, institutional buyers, traders, regulators, and finance partners — giving every participant the data edge they need to act with confidence in the world's most important emerging market.

The Problem We're Solving

In 2023, investigative journalism and academic research showed that over 90% of certain REDD+ credits from a major registry were likely worthless — not generating the emissions reductions they claimed.

SYNE Carbon was founded to fix this — building the independent rating and data infrastructure that carbon markets had always lacked.

Our Story

From crisis to
infrastructure

SYNE Carbon was born from the conviction that carbon markets needed what financial markets had spent 50 years building: rigorous, independent credit analysis, transparent methodology, and data infrastructure that could be trusted by all sides of the market.

2021
Founded in London

SYNE Carbon is founded by a team of carbon market veterans, satellite scientists, and financial data specialists. Seed round closed. Research into VCM integrity begins with a focus on independent forest carbon assessment.

2022
First Ratings Published

SYNE Carbon publishes independent ratings for the first 200 VCM projects, covering REDD+, cookstoves, and soil carbon. Earth Intelligence layer launched — fusing Copernicus satellite data with ground-truth validation. Series A funding closed.

2023
Compliance Market Expansion & API Launch

Compliance market data coverage launched — EU ETS, UK ETS, CCA, and RGGI real-time pricing. Developer API launched. Verra VCS and Gold Standard registry integration completed. Coverage expanded to 800+ projects across 40+ registries.

2024
Article 6 & Market Gateway

Article 6 corresponding adjustment tracking launched. Market Gateway connecting project developers to buyers, registries, and finance partners goes live. 1,800+ rated projects. Series B funding. Singapore and Sydney offices opened.

2025
Carbon Intelligence & Global Scale

Carbon Intelligence layer for tech-based removals launched. CORSIA Phase 2 integration. 28.4M+ credits rated. 40+ markets. Teravent registry partnership. Market infrastructure serving every major participant type globally.

Our Principles

What we believe
about carbon markets

01
Independence is non-negotiable

A rating agency cannot serve the entities it rates. SYNE Carbon has no financial stake in any project, registry, or trading venue. Our ratings are funded entirely by data subscribers — never by project developers or credit sellers.

02
Data replaces opinion

Carbon credit quality has been assessed by committees and consultants for too long. We believe satellite data, soil science, and quantitative models should replace subjective expert judgement wherever possible.

03
Methodology must be transparent

We publish our full rating methodology publicly. Every weighting, every factor, every data source — open to scrutiny. A carbon rating means nothing if you cannot understand how it was produced.

04
Markets need infrastructure, not intermediaries

Carbon markets have too many gatekeepers and too little shared infrastructure. We build open, API-first data systems that reduce friction for every participant — not closed platforms that extract rents from the ecosystem.

05
Capital follows quality, if given the data

The highest-quality carbon projects should command premium prices. The worst should find no buyers. With accurate, independent ratings, capital will flow to genuinely impactful climate solutions.

06
We work for all sides — or none

SYNE Carbon serves project developers, buyers, traders, regulators, and insurers simultaneously. Our independence is the product — it cannot be compromised for commercial convenience.
